Maya Abdominal Massage
What is Maya Abdominal Massage?
Maya Abdominal Massage is a non-invasive external massage technique to the abdomen and pelvis that helps to guide to the internal organs into their proper position, and relieve tension in the diaphragm. The technique applies Ancient Maya healing techniques along with anatomy, physiology, herbology and naprapathy (study of the ligaments, joints and muscles) to address common female and male complaints. The technique works by relieving congestion and blockages to improve the flow of blood, lymph, nerve impulses, and chi to prevent the progression of chronic disease symptomology.
The History of Maya Abdominal Massage Abdominal massage has been practiced for thousands of years. This non-invasive, external manipulation increases the flow of blood, lymph, nerve, and energy within the body. Passed down through the midwives, healers and shaman in the traditional healing practices of Central America, Africa, Egypt, and China, the knowledge and use of Abdominal Massage has largely been forgotten or suppressed in this century.
This technique as practiced today, was developed by Dr. Rosita Arvigo. Rosita moved to Belize in 1981, where she met and befriended the 92 year old Don Elijio Panti, one of the last traditional Maya Shaman. After following him around for a year and volunteering her help, she persuaded him to take her on as his apprentice. For the next 10 years, Don Elijio shared his wisdom of the healing plants of the rainforest, traditional massage, including the abdominal techniques, and spiritual healing with Rosita. Don Elijio believed that a woman's center is her uterus. "If a woman's uterus is out of balance, so is she," he would say. Midwives and healers of Central America agree that most female troubles are caused by the wandering womb. Don Elijio passed away in 1996 at the age of 103. Rosita also studied with Hortence Robinson, a 73 year old herbal midwife of Belize who has been delivering babies since she was 13. Rosita has taken this knowledge and combined it with her Western naprapathic and herbal training to form the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage.
